NEW FERMOY FOOD UNIT READY FOR PROPOSALS

The new food facility at Faber Castell in Fermoy, developed by Cork County Council in partnership with the North Cork Enterprise Board has just been completed and is ready for occupation by potential food processing businesses.

The premises has been specified and fitted out to top food grade and is aimed at emerging food businesses that are ready to get into production. The need for such facilities was identified by the Council and the Enterprise Board and stems from the increase in interest in niche food production and the appreciation of local quality that has been very evident over recent times.

According to Noel O’Driscoll of the Council’s Economic Unit, “these facilities are a vital part of the micro-enterprise infrastructure and can play a major role in helping to get niche food businesses established. We are very pleased to co-operate with the North Cork Enterprise Board in this venture and look forward to welcoming potential businesses to the unit”.

The food sector has been growing in North Cork and the Enterprise Board has experienced an increase in interest from potential entrepreneurs over the past year. “We have organised an intensive Food Training Programme for ten North Cork producers and most of these are now in business”, said Michael Hanley of the North Cork Enterprise Board. “These businesses range from baby foods to cheese products to niche bakery production and each has developed a business plan and a branding proposition. We would be hopeful that they will go on to become established in the marketplace and will inspire others to become involved in niche food production”. Michael Hanley said.

The Fermoy Food facility is located in the former Faber Castell complex, which is owned and developed by Cork County Council. The facility offers full food standard facilities and can be adapted for several different types of processes. It is available for food producers who are ready for the marketplace and full details may be had from the County Council Economic Unit or from the North Cork Enterprise Board.
